Cefn Coed Road
Mr & Mrs M Russell

A detached, luxury house to replace the existing dwelling. The site benefitted from a significant collection of mature trees to the front and rear providing the completed building with instant maturity. The brief comprised a series of large rooms, well connected with an open plan kitchen/dining/family room, a south facing rear terrace and light filled entrance hallway providing instant visibility of the garden and the views. The design is a contemporary solution comprising a series of mono pitched roofs and striking, timber clad features. At first floor three large bedrooms all with ensuites are located with the master bedroom on the second floor including his and her ensuites and spectacular views from a west facing terrace.

There is also a large indoor swimming pool, discreetly located to the rear of the property with a glazed elevation overlooking the garden to the west. The house is well set back in a road of large, predominantly Victorian and Edwardian villas and is screened by large trees, providing ample space for cars. To the rear the views are more open, so large areas of glazing have been provided to increase solar heat gain and allow plenty of light to flood into this modern home.

The timber frame construction with large spans and cantilevered structures, achieved entirely using timber components. Using a ‘fabric first’ approach which combines with exceptionally high insulation levels and triple glazed windows built to near Passiv Haus standards, with airtight yet breathable walls, no cold bridges and a whole-house ventilation system. All elements are detailed to a high level, with hidden gutters, a strong eaves line which runs around all faces of the building and into the lounge ceiling, two bespoke staircases and quality carpentry throughout.

The second spiral staircase leads to the later addition of an office over the garage, with its own entrance.

An inclusive sustainable design with both the garden and much of the ground floor fully adaptable to DDA standards designed to Lifetime Homes Standard. All main living spaces face South, as a result the house is filled with natural light, is comfortable whilst at the same time contemporary but not minimalist; a blend of both traditional craftsmanship and modern design.
