Major extension to Grade 2 listed hotel to provide a new spa, pool, treatment rooms, lounge, dining, open kitchen and staff facilities whilst at Holder Mathias. The spa has been sensitively and seamlessly inserted into a walled garden, and detailed sympathetically but in a contemporary style so that the new Bath stone extension is distinct from the old but to an equivalent level of luxury. The existing spa building was completely remodeled, inserting new plant and services within the limited ceiling voids with a small extension for the lounge bar and dining area. 

The project included a major modern extension for the treatment, thermal suite and pool areas, separated from the old listed wall by a frameless glazed link, and entirely built over the plant-room and store areas. The design features include a planar glazed pool roof; in-out infinity pool with a glass rim all round; invisible-channel edged level deck main pool; glass walls to many of the thermal rooms, sedum roof to the treatment rooms and a fireplace running the length of the swimming pool. The large glass walls which frame the view, pull back to blur the edges of inside and out, providing a protected environment for the guests. 

The spa was the winner of the Conde Nast Johansens Spa of the year.The work undertaken also included a masterplan concept for the long term development of the entire site, a smoking lodge, new entrance gates, new staff facility building, a wine cellar in the water tower and a concept to convert the dovecote to a bridal suite.
