Carolyn Merrifield

Ty Oriel is a private detached house designed and project managed by Downs Merrifield architects for their own use. A flexible, low energy, contemporary house built in the garden of the adjoining house designed around their current family and future needs. It incorporates open plan living with a family kitchen dining area which opens directly on to the garden, a work-live office, an art studio and 4 bedrooms. A limited palette of traditional materials was chosen to blend in with the surroundings - natural slate, lime render, zinc and timber.

The timber frame construction with large spans and cantilevered structures, achieved entirely using timber components. Using a ‘fabric first’ approach which combines with exceptionally high insulation levels and triple glazed windows built to near Passiv Haus standards, with airtight yet breathable walls, no cold bridges and a whole-house ventilation system. All elements are detailed to a high level, with hidden gutters, a strong eaves line which runs around all faces of the building and into the lounge ceiling, two bespoke staircases and quality carpentry throughout.

The second spiral staircase leads to the later addition of an office over the garage, with its own entrance.

An inclusive sustainable design with both the garden and much of the ground floor fully adaptable to DDA standards designed to Lifetime Homes Standard. All main living spaces face South, as a result the house is filled with natural light, is comfortable whilst at the same time contemporary but not minimalist; a blend of both traditional craftsmanship and modern design.
